Shorebird Book Project - Writing at Lake Conjola

The Birds, The Sea & Me - Anna Jarrett & Julie Sydenham in collaboration with south coast schools. A picture book about endangered shorebirds on the south coast of NSW, Australia

I'm excited to announce the publication of my children's picture book on the endangered shorebirds of the south coast NSW, The Birds, The Sea & Me. It was written as part of a shorebird education project funded by the NSW Environmental Trust and hosted by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service South Coast Shorebird Recovery Program. The education program has been running for four years and weve been getting a great response from both schools and the general public. The publication of The Birds, The Sea & Me, is a wonderful addition to the shorebird education programs, and we hope that itll provide a valuable resource which informs people about he shorebirds and inspires everyone to help to care for them.

The Shorebird Book Project involved art and writing workshops as well as beach visits with six Shoalhaven schools, National Park rangers and shorebird volunteers.

I was both the Creative Director and the writer for this project, working in collaboration with south coast artist, Julie Sydenham. The book tells the story of the endangered shorebirds through the eyes of a ten year old girl, Rikki. Each page is a visual delight, combining original artwork by school students with layers of illustrative design by Julie.

The book aims to inform people about the endangered shorebirds, and to explore the story around why they're so vulnerable and also so special. The featured shorebirds are the pied oystercatcher, the hooded plover and the little tern. Each bird has it's own unique story. It's a delightful read for the whole family as well as a very important teaching tool for school, relevant to subjects across the curriculum.

Were getting rave reviews and Id like to share the one written by Chris Grounds for Birdlife Shoalhaven news.
